Crowds

When it comes to crowds, May is complicated. The month begins with really low crowds. The first 4 weeks crowds during the week are pretty light, weekends crowds pick up but it is still not to bad. Then you get to the last week of May and bam the crowds are really high.

The last week of the month of May gets a little tricky depending on when the Gay Days celebration hits town. It's always held the first weekend in June. For example in 2013, Saturday is June 1, so Gay Days starts on May 30. Without Gay Days crowds are really light throughout the month.

  • Heavy - the yellow color - 30 minute wait on all rides, 1-2 hours on the big rides, must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to shows.

May Events

There are 2 big events at Walt Disney World in May are Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival and the beginning of Star Wars Weekends in Disney Hollywood Studios.

Star Wars Weekends at Disney Hollywood Studios

Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World are the most awesome event for fans of the Star Wars Series. Fans pack Disney Hollywood Studios dressed as their favorite characters to hear actors from the movies and cartoon series discuss Star Wars.

There are special parades for Star Wars fans. Just imagine all the characters from the movie parading up and down the streets of Disney Hollywood Studios. The characters interact with all of the fans during these weekends.

Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival

The past 20 years Epcot has been home of the International Flower and Garden Festival. Special designers from HGTV come in and host seminars. The Flower Power Concert series is a great addition to this festival. Groovy sounds coming America Gardens Theatre.

Weather

The best time to visit Disney World is May because of the weather. The weather in Orlando in May can be spectacular. Most days at beautiful sunny days. There are a few scattered showers. The temperatures are not to hot yet but just about perfect.

The average low in May is 66ºF. The average high is 88ºF . This is perfect for strolling through the parks in shorts and a tshirt. A light jacket or sweater might be needed during chilly evenings or early mornings.

Pros and Cons

The best time to visit Disney World is May because -

  • Star Wars Weekends at Disney Hollywood Studios
  • Epcot's International Garden and Flower Festival
  • Weather
  • Low Crowds

The reasons to avoid a trip to Disney World in December are -

  • Big crowds in Disney Hollywood Studios on the weekends
  • Crowds visiting the Flower and Garden Festival

There are drawbacks to every month and almost every week.

Dad's Bottom Line

I don't know how any month can be prettier than May. The old saying "April showers bring May flowers" is certainly true at Walt Disney World. No crowds, great events, perfect weather. What could possibly beat May at Disney World. (Maybe Christmas.)
