Camping at Disney World - Fort Wilderness Campgrounds

Camping at Disney World is the cheapest way to spend your time in Orlando. Yes, you can actually pitch a tent and jump into your sleeping bag right there almost in the shadow of the Magic Kingdom. If you are in to camping out, this is camping out in style. This is the least expensive place to sleep at Disney World with rates starting at $49.00 (plus tax) per night.

Campsites

There are 799, no not 800, but 799 campsites at Ft. Wilderness Campground. These campsites are snuggled into plush, forested areas that share a home with all kinds of critters such as deer, rabbits and even an occasional bug or two. (When they get through at It's Tough to be a Bug they come over here to sleep.)

Each site is unique. Some sites have big pads and small grass areas (some no grass at all) and some have small pads and big grass areas.

The Layout

Campsites are scattered over a 1 mile area. There is a loop that runs around the outside of the campground and a road that runs directly from the main entrance to the marina.

The Best Campsites

The most desirable campsites are those at either end of the resort. Those closest to transportation. There are actually 4 categories of sites. Premium, Preferred, Full and Partial Hookup. Premium sites are for big rigs and will accommodate a RV of more than 45 feet in length. Preferred are closer to the marina and the front gate. Full and Partial Hookup sites are located around the resort.

Cable TV?

Yes, most of the campsites even have cable TV and the preferred sites even have internet hookups. All sites have electricity (20/30/50 amps) and water hookups along with a picnic table and grill. The full hookup sites have sewer. The 90 partial hookups (which are located on the 1500 loop and the 2000 loop) don't have sewer hookups and are primarily used for tent campers and those with tent trailers.

Dad's Bottom Line

While Dad is not big on camping at Disney World or anywhere else for that matter (bad experience, ask me about it sometime) but if I was forced to go camping, Disney World would be a great place to spend a few days with nature and with Mickey. It's a match made in heaven.
