History
Once upon a time there was a sleepy little town in central Florida named Orlando. It was a medium sized town of about 75,000. Like most Florida towns it had a few tourist traps that attracted tourists for an afternoon but not much longer. The "THE MAN" came to town and transformed the sleepy little town into a the top family vacation destination in the world.
There are now 6 major theme parks in Orlando, 4 water parks, more than 140,000 hotel rooms, several major tourist attractions, hundreds of restaurants and over 1 million permanant residents in the metropolitan area.
It's interesting how the 2 major Orlando tourist attractions differ. If you want discount tickets to Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure, you can find discounts at every corner. You might even score some free tickets. Universal has partnered with some of the other Central Florida attractions to create an affordable multi-day multi-park pass (Orlando FlexTicket). But the mouse doesn't participate.
The Mouse Kingdom doesn't offer big discounts on tickets. Uncle Walt keeps a pretty tight reign on his tickets. Ticket brokers aren't offered big discounts so WDW ticket prices don't vary much. But sometimes Disney does get soft and offer guest free tickets.

Universal Studios Florida is the home of Dad's favorite theme park attraction anywhere (sorry Unc). Men In Black is Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin on megasteriods. USF, like Disney World, has several rides based on movies.
Like WDW, Universal is a multi-park destination. Islands of Adventure is the second theme park. It has several high end roller coasters and some mind blowing rides. (Spiderman comes to mind.)

Other Attractions in Orlando
Orlando is a lot more than Disney and Universal. There are lots of great attractions around town. The water parks are top notch, the secondary attractions are interesting and worth a look. Sea World and Aquatica
Sea World has been in Orlando since 1973, 2 years after Walt Disney World opened. This is where Shamu, the killer whale, and his buddies put on a show daily for thousands of guests. Aquatica is a new park, owned by Sea World, where guest can get some quality time with marine life.
