Driving and parking around Walt Disney World

Driving and parking around Walt Disney World

We have always stayed at a Walt Disney World property and used Walt Disney World transportation to and from the parks. But this time are arriving June 4th this year and renting a car so we can explore Orlando if we want and go to the beach for a couple of days.

Considering when are going, is it to our advantage to be driving and parking around Disney World in the rental car or would it be better to use Disney transportation?

We want to get to the parks ahead of the crowd...will this help? Do resort guests have separate parking areas at the parks and are they closer to the entrances than the general public?

Dad's don't leave the driving to Disney Answer

Cathy,

Thank you for a great question about Disney Transportation. Let me start with, Disney does a great job moving millions of people every month, yes, millions every month, around the resort. It's amazing just how well the transportation system at Disney World works.

That being said, you driving and parking around Disney World in a rental car will almost always beat Disney Transportation. There are only a few exceptions.

The Exceptions

If you are staying in one of the hotels on the monorail, it will be quicker to ride the monorail, or walk (or take the ferry from the Polynesian) to the Magic Kingdom. It makes no sense to drive all the way back to the parking lot to get on a tram to bring you to the Transportation and Ticket Center to ride the ferry or monorail to the Magic Kingdom. The same is true for Epcot. The monorail is better.

If you are staying in one of the Boardwalk area hotels, taking the boat or walking to Epcot and Disney Hollywood Studios is the best way to get to those parks.

That's it. If you are staying at any other hotel, it will almost always be faster to take your own car. (Yes, if you just happen to hit the line when the bus arrives and get on the first bus it would be faster because the buses drop you off at the gate and if you drive you'll have to ride a tram.) But in June, that's not real likely to happen.

Dad's Bottom Line

Disney resort guests don't get any special parking privileges, but driving and parking around Disney World will almost always be faster than using Disney's Fabulous Transportation System.
