Sea World came to Orlando in 1972, the year after the new Orlando Magic Kingdom opened. It quickly became one of Central Florida's best alternative tourist destinations.

It's interesting that Uncle Walt's boys haven't built a park (although one is rumored to be on the drawing board) to compete with Sea World. Disney rushed the Studios into service long before it was really ready because Universal was building their new theme park in Orlando. Disney built Animal Kingdom to compete with Busch Gardens (they deny it, but...). After all these years they still haven't come up with anything to compete with Shamu (there's not even a big water exhibit in Animal Kingdom).

Aquatica

Aquatica opened in 2008. Lots of Caribbean cruise excursions feature a "swim with the dolphins" encounter. Aquatica brings this experience to Central Florida along with a lot more. There are water slides, a lazy river (which flows under the dolphin tank), and a big wave pool.

Finding the Discount

There are hundreds of outlets that will sell you discount tickets to Sea World and other attractions. The question is who has the best price. Dad alway suggests you check out a couple of sources. The first place to try is the website of the park. Why? Because sometimes they run tremendous specials that they don't pass along.

The next place to look is discount sites you trust. Compare two or three. Dad's favorite is Dad's site (imagine that). Make sure the discount site doesn't tack on additional charges. You can expect to pay about 7% sales tax and a deliver charge if you have the tickets shipped to you. Several ticket sellers have locations in Orlando where you can pick up your ticket. Most will deliver to your hotel.

Be very careful with sites that don't take credit cards. If a site only takes cash or money orders, run away, quickly.
