2021 Tron and Ticketed Events
"I just read that a new Tron ride will be opening at magic kingdom in 2021 - do you have any information on when in 2021? Do you think crowds in Late April/early May of 2021 will be higher than normal because of the anniversary?
Also, after our last trip we learned about after hours ticketed events-it wouldn’t have worked for us this time because our kids are a little too young yet-but in 2021 we think it could work for us. We don’t love crowds and we never manage more than 6 hours at a park anyways. But I just read a bunch of doom and gloom comments about how Disney will likely just begin to pack those events as they did with the Halloween and Christmas after hours parties-do you think that will happen?
I can understand Disney packing the holiday after hours events, or special themed events, but my understanding of these generic after hours events is that the appeal is fewer people. You have less time in the park-but less lines. There’s really nothing special going on to tempt people to pay the same for less time (and no FastPass option) unless there are way smaller crowds-would you agree? Or do you think Disney will start over crowding those events as well?
Thanks for your input!"
Tron and 2021
It's a long time until 2021, but it will be here before you know it. Amazing how that works.
I don't think anyone has a clue when the Tron ride will open. I know Disney wants to have it open by the 50th anniversary celebration, but you never know. In fact, the Disney Skyliner is supposed to open in the fall, this year, but we don't know a date yet.
Typically, we know opening dates 3 to 6 months before the opening. So it will be at least a year before we have a clue when the Tron ride will make its debut.
Crowds in 2021
The crowds will be somewhat bigger in 2021. I don't expect crazy big crowds, except right around October 1st (the actual anniversary date). Yes, I'll be right in the middle of those October 1st crowds.
The late April/early May crowds will be fairly normal. Even if the celebration starts that early (and it might), I don't think there will be a big rush unless something big, like Tron, is opening right at that time.
After Hours Crowds
Don't listen to the doom and gloom predictions about After Hours. I just went to After Hours at Disney's Hollywood Studios a couple of weeks ago. What fun. We walked on to every ride. No a wait at all and that included Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Slinky Dog Dash and more.
I'm more afraid Disney will do away with After Hours because they can't sell enough tickets than them packing it. My guess is there weren't more than 1,500 people at the After Hours we went to. That's not because Disney limited ticket sales. It's because the price is so high that not many people were willing to pay for it. At $125 or more, for a two and a half hours in the parks, most people aren't going to pay that.
In contrast a Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party
or Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party
tickets start at $85 for 8 hours in the park.
I just don't see After Hours ever becoming a "packed" event as long as the ticket prices are kept so high.
Dad's Bottom Line
At this point there is no predicting when Tron will open. Sometime in 2021, probably before October 1st, would be as much as I would predict. Crowds in 2021, especially earlier in the year, will follow the normal patterns.
Also I don't think After Hours will ever be an over crowded event.
Hope that helps.
