When you think of Christmas and Disney, most people automatically think of the beautiful lights and trees in the parks and resorts. While they are certainly beautiful, you can also visit Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground and see a beautiful display of lights and Christmas décor and it won’t cost you a dime!
Around mid-November, there are a lot of Fort Wilderness regulars that haul all of their decorations in trailers in to the campgrounds. All of the Halloween lights and displays come down, and their Christmas blow ups and lights go up. It is truly a sight to behold!
You will see anything from homemade Mickey lanterns to complete layouts with the monorail running and rope lights illuminating a path to a walk through musical display. Just when you think you’ve seen every Christmas blow up imaginable, you will see a new and clever one at the Fort. Some are even motion inflatables!
The best way to view these elaborate displays is to take a bus to Magic Kingdom and hop on a boat in the front, bearing to the right for the Fort Wilderness boat. Once you disembark at the Fort dock, head directly past the Settlement Trading Post and enter at the 100 loop. There is much to see within walking distance but if you like, you can take a bus at the Settlement Depot to get off at other loop areas.
To fully take advantage of the festive decorations throughout the resort, you can also rent a golf cart and really explore this wonderful campground. Be sure to bring along your camera; you’re surely going to want to take some pictures of the amazing and spectacular displays.
I highly recommend making a night of it and having dinner at Trails End Buffet and then either walking off your dinner or hopping on your rented cart to take in the colorful “sites”. Be sure to schedule well before 10:00 pm since Disney has recently implemented a 10:00 pm shut off time so that the music and lights do not disturb other campers.
Be sure to bring along a coat or jacket, as the evenings are especially cool this time of year and even a little cooler in the woodsy Fort Wilderness area. I know you will be glad that you took the time to get away from the busy parks and enjoy the just as festive atmosphere at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.
