We have Magic Bands from a previous visit to WDW. Can we use these same bands for an upcoming visit? wants me to customize (new?) bands.

Dad’s Reduce Reuse Recycle Answer

Tim, great question. As an essential part of My Magic+, Magic Bands are designed to be worn for a long time – I mean, they give the same bands to folks who visit for a weekend as they do for Annual Passholders. But how long do they really last?

According to my sources, it sounds like the battery in a Magic Band lasts for up to 2 years. So, if you went say, 6 months ago and you’re going again, there’s no reason you can’t re-use your Magic Band.

If you’re getting close to that 2-year-mark though, you might be in for a hairy situation if your Magic Band dies during your trip, in which case you’d need to purchase a new one if you declined the freebies.

When you book a package with Disney, new Magic Bands are automatically included. This is a good idea so that folks don’t lose their old bands, and so newbies get one before they even realize they need one. It makes things nice and easy. Plus, it’s included as an added value for booking on site.

When you sign into My Disney Experience, you’ll be able to click to see your Magic Bands. Then follow these steps:

If you want to order a new band, simply follow the prompts to pick a new color and add your name, then sit back and wait for them to be shipped to you.

If you want to reuse your old bands, click on the option to decline the new Magic Bands. Then you’ll need to add your new reservation to your old band. You can do this yourself online, or call Disney and have them take care of things, or wait until you arrive to have the front desk make sure you’re all set up. Even if you do it at home, it’s probably a good idea to have the Cast Member at check in make sure everything is as it should be.

Or, you could dump all the hassle on our friends at Destinations to Travel. This is just the kind of thing the love helping with. Book with them and they will take great care of you. I promise.

Dad’s Bottom Line

Tim, it’s totally up to you. Dad likes a new band on each trip so I don’t forget it at home, and Mrs. Mom loves getting a new color. If those aren’t concerns for your family and your last trip wasn’t too long ago then go ahead and reduce, reuse, recycle!
