Do you need a car at Disney World?

For a PERFECT Disney World vacation, do you need a car at Disney World? That's a good question. There are hundreds of reasons both for and against having a car. Everyone is different so ...

Let's take a good look at who does and who doesn't ...

Who Does ...

If you are not staying in one of Disney World's resorts, you should have a car. End of story. Why? Because most hotels have shuttles that will take you to the parks, but the schedules aren't always convenient. (Dad's recent visit proves why you need a car at Disney World.)

If your PLAN takes you outside Disney World for a meal or to visit one of the other attractions in Orlando (sorry Uncle Walt, but it happens) you will probably want to have a car at Disney World. Disney Transportation, for some unknown reason, doesn't go to any other attraction or to hotels outside of Disney World property. I just don't understand.

Taxi's are available at all the hotels and theme parks, but it's just not the same. (Check out Dad's first taxi ride.) You could rent limos to chauffeur you around all week... (not a bad idea if you can afford it)

Who doesn't need a car

If you're staying in a Disney hotel or one of the Disney World partner hotels and your PLAN is to remain on property, then you might not need a car. Yes I said might not. Disney provides loads of free transportation. They will be happy to shackle you, keep you in their evil clutches, while greedily sucking the money out of your wallet every second of the day and night. (just kidding... sorta)

Disney has a service that will pick you up at the airport, transport you to your hotel and when your vacation is over, take you back to the airport.

Disney Transportation will take you everywhere you need to go during your vacation.

Disney Transportation

Disney Transportation is incredible. Most major cities could take lessons from Disney. Buses, trains, monorails, boats, carriages, and just about any other form of transportation you can think of Disney uses it. (Dad's random thoughts about having a car at Walt Disney World.)

Disney will cart you from park to park, from hotel to the parks, from hotels to the shopping areas, from hotel to hotel... And the best part of all is they don't charge any more money for the service. Aren't they nice?

The only problem is, Disney controls the timetable. Sometimes they make it pretty difficult to get from point A to point B.

Example - To get from Epcot to Disney Springs, you have to take a bus, or a boat, to one of the hotels and grab a bus, or a boat, to Disney Springs. (Read about Dad's trip from Epcot to Disney Springs.) Depending on which hotel you pick, that could take from 30 minutes to an hour and a half.

If you try to get from Epcot to Disney Springs, Dad suggests to go to the Value or Moderate resort with the shortest line. When you get to the resort, you will then get in line for Disney Springs. The Value and Moderate Resorts have the most buses in service, but, on the bad side, they also have the longest lines.

Where to get a car in Orlando

Finding a rental vehicle in Orlando is really simple. The airport has all the major agencies and a few minor ones. Several companies actually have cars in one of the parking garages. (No shuttle bus.)

You can also get a car at Disney World, right on the property. At Disney's Car Care Center there is an Alamo Rental Car booth.

Dad's bottom line

Dad is a typical male and likes the freedom having a car brings. (Really he's just too much of a control freak not to have a car at Disney World, but that's another story.) You might not use it everyday, but it will come in handy. It's a must if you are staying outside of Disney World.

Yes, Dad thinks you need a car at Disney World. (Maybe Dad is changing his mind on this one.)
