“Hi there! My husband and I, along with our 7-year-old daughter are first-timers going Dec 16-20 of this year. I am afraid we are not prepared for the crowds we will be facing. I was thinking we would beat the Christmas rush, but with Star Wars in the mix, I am thinking it will be a different story. What is your opinion, and do you have any tips to make things a little easier?

Thanks!!”

We Don’t Know

Savannah,

Howdy. Guess what?

YOU’RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!

That’s something to celebrate right. Party time!

Nobody has a clue what the crowds are really going to be like when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens up. I know predictions for Disneyland are 200,000 people the day it opens. That’s not going to happen, because that far exceeds Disneyland’s capacity.

Everyone (including me) says the crowds will be crazy when it opens, but since we don’t even know the date yet, it’s all speculation.

I have updated my December crowd calendar using the November 22nd opening date I’ve been predicting for months.

Dad's December Disney World Crowds Calendar

Yes, it’s going to be busy. Not Christmas Week busy, but it will be busy. It might not be as bad as you think.

Patterns from Previous New Lands

When both Pandora and Toy Story Land opened the new lands were jammed. 4 to 6 hour lines were common. For Pandora the first couple of days it was a 4 hour line just to get in to get in line for the rides.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be the same, only worse.

BUT…

The crowds in the other parks were smaller than normal. Everyone was at the new land and not at the other parks.

I think it will be the same in December (if Galaxy’s Edge is open).

Overall, Not Bad

My guess is, while Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be totally and completely crazy after Galaxy’s Edge opens, overall the crowd levels in the other parks won’t be bad at all. They might even be a little less that what we’d expect.

What to do

So what do you do if you encounter crowds? Check out my 10 ways to avoid WDW crowds page.

I also break down how to avoid the crowd in each park.

That should help. The best thing you can do is to have a PLAN!

Destinations to Travel

Dad’s Bottom Line

Susannah (no, I don’t come from Alabama or own a banjo), yes, crowds will be busy that week because of the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. A little, or a lot, busier than normal especially in Disney’s Hollywood Studios but the other parks might actually be slower than would be expected.

YOU’RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD. It will be Fun, no it will be Magic. Make a good PLAN and everything will be fine.

Personally, I would try and go the week before, 2nd week of December and not the 16-20. That is actually when the crowd starts coming in. You might be okay the first few days, but earlier is always better in December
