Is anything special planned for Leap Day?

by Chris

Hi! I'm wondering why the high crowd rating on Leap Day? I haven't seen any announcements for extra events. We'll be there 2/28 - 3/4.

Dad’s Leap Frog Answer

Hi Chris, now that we are less than a week away from Leap Day on February 29, I’m pretty confident in saying that nothing “special” will happen on that day this year. It could happen (c’mon Disney, prove me wrong!), but I don’t think so. Does that mean Dad’s crowd calendar is – WRONG? Nope. Dad still predicts a busy day, so let’s make like a frog and leap on over to the reasons why.

Reason 1: WDW has been a slow poke. This year, announcements have been coming out very, very slowly and much closer to the start date than we’ve seen previously. Shucks, even the information for the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival only came out last week – and it opens March 2! That’s a way bigger deal than a 1-day special event. So like I said, Disney could surprise us all in the coming days with an announcement of something special happening. Afterall…

Reason 2: It’s tradition. Okay, that might be stretching things a little far. But once Disney does something once (like the 24-hour event on February 29, 2012) the fans seem to think it’s set in stone. Disney has done nothing to lend support or discouragement to the expectation that something will happen, which is why…

Reason 3: The bookings are up! Folks may have been expecting a special event for the day to be released, but unless you’re a local planning a trip to WDW takes some advance planning. Mark my words, a lot of people have scheduled their vacations for next week in case something happens. And even if it doesn’t….

Reason 4: Monday is usually a busy day. Many families start or end their vacation on a Monday/Tuesday to avoid the higher priced weekend flights. That means there’s an overlap of departing and arriving guests – and higher crowd levels as a result.

Dad's Bottom Line

Chris, You’ll probably find that there will be nothing special for February 29, especially since the 24-hour event has been held on Memorial Day weekend the past few years. If there ends up not being an event, crowds will be a little lower than I predicted but for anyone who already made plans to travel in for Leap Day - they’re not cancelling their plans just because no special event happens.
