Picking our room at the Art of Animation

by Diane

My daughter, 3 1/2 year old grandson and I are planning a trip the last week of October – just checking in on Sunday and leaving Wednesday (three nights – we can’t stay for Halloween but did want to book one of the parties).

I’ve seen discussions about room discounts or free meal plans. We are planning on getting a room in Art of Animation. If you ask for a room in a certain building do they do the assignments by when you make your reservation or when you are available to check-in?

Is there any chance of picking up a discount or should we book now? I did get a Disney Visa, but all they offer is action financing.

Dad’s Pick and Choose Answer

When booking a room at a Walt Disney World Resort Hotel, just like at most hotels around the world, you are not able to pick your specific room prior to arrival. There are certain ways to secure a particular type of room, and ways to make requests upon arrival and from home before you leave, but these requests cannot be guaranteed. Let’s look at a few ways that you can try to pick and choose your resort room.

When booking at most resort hotels on property you have a few options: all hotels offer standard or preferred rooms (the difference in the category refers only to the location within the resort – preferred rooms are located closer to resort amenities like food, pools, and transportation). You may also have the option of booking a regular room, themed room, suite, or villa. Since both of these options affect the price of your room, you are guaranteed to your room type selection upon arrival.

At Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, your options are as follows: A family suite in the Cars area, a family suite in the Finding Nemo area, a family suite in the Lion King area, and a standard room in the Little Mermaid area. You don’t have the option of picking a preferred room (but Finding Nemo suites are closest to Animation Hall), but you can select a room (Little Mermaid only) or a suite (your choice of the other 3 themes).

Prior to arrival, if you have issues such s wheelchair accessibility you should let Disney resort reservations know about your needs, but otherwise you can make requests about your specific room upon arrival. For instance, if you’d like a first floor room, or a pool-view room, you can ask what is available at check in. Your request may not be able to be accommodated, but the cast members will certainly try their best!

In terms of discounts, you have a big chance of being able to pick one up for your trip, but the October discounts will not be offered until later in the summer. You’re probably looking at a room discount – but be aware that the Art of Animation discounts are usually not as generous as at other resorts since it’s a new and popular destination. It’s unlikely that you’ll be offered free dining, but Dad would love to be proved wrong – he thinks free dining is dead.

I’d wait to book but if you’re anxious to get your plans sorted out, consider booking your trip with a Disney travel agent like Destinations to Travel. They can get you the best price possible now and if a discount comes up in the future that applies to your booking, they can have your package altered to reflect the discounted price!

Dad’s Bottom Line

Diane, you may not be able to pick and choose your exact room, but you do have some option in terms of room type – and you may be able to get a discount. While Art of Animation is fun, if you’re concerned about saving on accommodations, the other value resorts offer a much better value for money, even without a discount.
